‘Not the same’: Liverpool star says Real Madrid tie won’t be like famous European comeback
When it comes to the Champions League, Liverpool are down but not quite out.
Inspired by a midfield masterclass from Toni Kroos, Real Madrid were convincing 3-1 winners in last week’s quarter-final first leg, but an away goal from Mo Salah means Jurgen Klopp’s men are still in with a chance.
As their team seek to overhaul that deficit, some Liverpool fans may be casting their minds back to the famous triumph over Barcelona in May 2019. On that occasion, Barca had won the first leg 3-0 and the return at Anfield was seen as a formality.
Instead, Liverpool conjured a memorable 4-0 win on a night no-one at Anfield will forget, before going on to beat Tottenham in the final.
Ahead of tonight’s crucial second leg, however, Andy Robertson has insisted the lack of fans means comparisons between tonight’s task and the victory over Barcelona are inappropriate.
As quoted by , the left-back said: “Both (the games against Barcelona and Real Madrid) are different.
“Barcelona was an incredible night and wouldn’t have been possible with the fans. The noise they made…
“Tomorrow we don’t have that against the most experienced in the tournament. A fantastic team. It’s a big task for us. (It’s) not the same.
“The Barcelona game, that wouldn’t be possible without the fans. The fans made us feel 10 feet tall.
“Walking out to 55,000 other people who believed, [they] gave you that extra 10 percent.
“We need to try and create that atmosphere in the changing room before we go out. We’ve got to have no regrets.”
