‘I’ve never seen’: Gary Neville stunned by what’s happened to two Tottenham players at the World Cup

Gary Neville says the Wales defence, containing Tottenham duo Ben Davies and Joe Rodon has not been good enough at the World Cup.

Davies has been a key part of Wales’ progress in recent years, and played on the left of a back three in the opening two games of the tournament before moving to left-back against England.

Rodon had to go out on loan to Rennes to get gametime at the World Cup, but has struggled for form and confidence as Wales have been eliminated.

On , Neville criticised the performances of the Welsh defence, especially in the 2-0 defeat against Iran, which proved crucial.

Neville on Davies and Rodon

He said of Wales: “The back players are not good enough.

“We saw that against Iran. I’ve never seen a back three get pulled around so much.

“That’s why Rob Page went with a back four against England. The back three against Iran were getting pulled from pillar to post, crossing over all the time.”

Neville said elsewhere in his interview that he was disappointed with Wales on the whole as they exited the tournament with just one point and one goal.

Getting out of the group was always going to be hard but it might have been expected that they would leave more of a mark on the tournament.

Rodon will not have done much to convince Antonio Conte to make him part of his plans after his loan spell ends, while Davies will be looking to recover quickly and get back into it with Spurs.
