Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has praised Rangers midfielder Steven Davis as he prepares to become his country’s most capped outfield player of all time,
Davis will move just six caps away from Pat Jennings’ all-time record and O’Neill says that level of international longevity means the midfielder should be mentioned in the same breath as Cristiano Ronaldo.
He : “It’s a great achievement. Whenever he does hang up his boots, which hopefully will be after I’ve left this job, he will rightly be remembered as one of the greatest players we’ve ever had.
“I was watching Cristiano Ronaldo play at 34 years of age for his country and what it means to him, and that’s why international football is so special. Steven deserves to be talked about in that breath because I believe he will go on and break Pat Jennings’ record.”

Rangers losing to Celtic in the final league match before the first international break of the season means that the result can linger in the air and eat away at the players.
That means that Davis going off and picking up international recognition and having his spirits lifted by his manager is the perfect way for him to get over it and take his mind off it.
If Davis can play a key part in getting a result against the might of Germany, it would be even better for his morale when he returns to Rangers to help them get back on track this weekend.
