It has not always been the easiest campaign for Meslier. The 21-year-old came in for criticism earlier in the season. But he is silencing his doubters on a regular basis in recent times.

And Whelan insisted that he was hugely impressive as Leeds went on to secure a famous win over the soon-to-be champions.

“He was excellent,” . “Lots of crosses came in from both sides with quality. He really did command that 18-yard box. And when it came to shots from outside the box, Fernandinho had a really strong one, nice and strong there with the palm over the bar.

“Another one came in from Zinchenko, fantastic save, and then he gets back up and shows that agility to smother the ball and stop Raheem Sterling getting a tap-in there. He was immense all day, very rarely did he make a mistake.”

Meslier has been a revelation in the Premier League. Leeds fans had a glimpse of his potential towards the end of last season. But there was some uncertainty over how he would get on over a much longer period at a higher level.

However, the youngster has stepped up in some style. As previously noted, he has had his critics at times. But Leeds appear to have an absolute gem on their hands.
