Noel Whelan makes Illan Meslier claim after Leeds win

Noel Whelan that Illan Meslier is getting better and better, lauding the Frenchman for an excellent display in Leeds United’s win over Spurs on Saturday.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were outstanding at Elland Road. They beat Spurs 3-1. And had it not been for Hugo Lloris, the scoreline could have been much worse for the visitors.

But Leeds were also grateful to Meslier. He made an astonishing stop when a deflection off Gjanni Alioski sent a cross towards his near post.

The 21-year-old also denied Erik Lamela with a brilliant dash off his line to block the Argentinian’s attempt. And Whelan hinted that the fact that few are talking about Meslier’s performance highlights just how far he has come.

“He was excellent again,” .

“Meslier, for me, just gets better and better and better. And the fact that he wasn’t really involved in the game that much, like Lloris was, he was always there when needed, and alert. And that’s from crosses and set-pieces as well, and he just seems to be getting more and more confident in commanding that 18-yard box and six-yard box area.”

It does seem remarkable just how quickly Meslier is adapting. There have been times when he has been criticised and his decision-making has been questioned.

Admittedly, there were moments in the campaign when the youngster did seem to make costly errors. However, he has silenced any doubters in emphatic fashion.

It is almost frightening to think of the level he could reach in the coming years. As Whelan notes, he appears to be improving at a rapid rate and is already proving to be an outstanding performer at the highest level for Leeds.
