Noel Whelan claims Leeds could sell player, and take an £8m hit

Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds – – that Leeds United could sell Helder Costa this summer as he continues to struggle for the Whites in the Premier League, but Whelan reckons Leeds would have to take a hit on Costa.

Costa, 27, joined Leeds initially on loan from Wolves in the summer of 2019 – and impressed on the whole. He had a hand in 13 goals during 46 appearances in 2019-20, scoring five goals and creating eight more. In the summer, Leeds bought Raphinha.

That saw one-time Portugal international Costa fall down the pecking order with Jack Harrison first choice on the left. Costa has played 22 times in the Premier League this season, scoring two and creating three but ultimately, struggling.

That is, after his loan was made permanent for £16million () last summer. Leeds icon Whelan believes the Whites will have to cash in on Costa in the coming months but if they are to do so, they might only get half of what they paid.

“He [Costa] has done nothing, but I just think when we look at our squad can we afford to let certain players go? I don’t think he is good enough, but I just don’t think we can allow or let him go right now.

“But who is going to take him? We are going to [have to] take a massive hit on that. Probably sell him for what? £8m? We aren’t going to get double figures for him,” Whelan continued, following the 2-0 loss to Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

TBR’s view – Costa needs to go, for the good of his career

Harrison will be signed permanently this summer and the chances are that Raphinha will probably remain at Elland Road for another season, before Leeds might have to cash in on his services. So, staying at Leeds would see Costa sit on the bench.

Leeds will be improving their side in the transfer window going forward and certainly, Ian Poveda is showing enormous quality from the bench at the moment. Costa, for the best interests of his career as he edges closer to his peak, needs to go.
