It has been a remarkable season for Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s men are still on pole position to secure a top-four place and a spot in the Champions League next year.

The 31-year-old has played the majority of the season at left-back. And he has done a superb job, so much so that there was a debate about whether he should be ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko in the team of the year.

Danny Murphy felt that Zinchenko should get the nod. However, he was full of praise for what Burn has achieved given the player he saw alongside him at Fulham just over a decade ago.

“I think Dan Burn deserves great credit because no-one gave him a chance,” he told .

“When he came to Fulham, I never thought he would be a Premier League defender. He’s really come on leaps and bounds. And even at full-back, I thought he’d be a centre-half. He’s been part of the back four I think has been the best defence in the Premier League, or it was a couple of weeks ago. So he deserves great credit for that.”

Certainly, the deal to bring Burn to St James’ Park highlights how clever the owners have been in the market.

Most of us expected Newcastle to splash the cash and bring in superstar names. But they instead built a squad the fans adore. And Burn is one of those who has a brilliant relationship with the supporters.

Newcastle spent just to sign him from Brighton. And when you consider how good he has been since making the move, that has to go down as one of the biggest bargains the club has produced in recent years.
