No key passes, six unsuccessful touches, 62% pass rate: Tottenham star looks bereft of confidence

Steven Bergwijn is struggling at Tottenham and his performance against Burnley on Wednesday night was a shadow of what he is capable of.

Bergwijn, 24, joined Tottenham in January 2020 after shining for PSV Eindhoven. He produced 72 goal involvements in 149 appearances.

That earned him a move to Spurs but after 59 games, he has scored just four goals and only created nine more. On Wednesday, he was incredibly poor.

Little surprise. This season, the Netherlands international has failed to find the back of the net in his eight appearances – laying on just one assist.

He started against Burnley as Nuno Espirito Santo looked to rest Son Heung-min. But he was forced to call upon Son, with Bergwijn struggling.

With Son on the pitch, Spurs looked so much more threatening and while they did not add to their score – Nuno’s men looked better without Bergwijn.

Bergwijn Burnley stats: Tottenham might have to consider January loan

Bergwijn a rating of just 6.16, only Bryan Gil getting less. That is hardly surprised given the Spaniard went off injured after 25.

Bergwijn failed to have any shots on target and any key passes. He only managed 13 successful passes all night, guilty of six unsuccessful touches.

Bergwijn needs to restore some confidence. The £73k-a-week () attacker should be considering a January loan move away from the club.

If Tottenham can find him a decent loan, at a club where he will start and play attacking football – then a January exit for Bergwijn benefits all.
