‘No chance’… £68m player will definitely not join Arsenal this month

Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, but a move has been branded as impossible this month.

The Gunners are expected to pull off at least one deal in this window. They could do with additions in several areas of the pitch, including central defence. De Ligt, however, won’t be joining Arsenal in the winter window, claims Dean Jones.

Matthijs de Ligt will not join Arsenal in January

Arsenal have been linked with a few defenders over the last few weeks

The Gunners have a fantastic central defensive partnership in Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba. They’ve both been sensational for Arsenal since the start of last season.

However, if one of them becomes unavailable, Mikel Arteta has problems. Jakub Kiwior is a decent player, but he has been linked with a move away from the Emirates.

Ben White can be moved to a central role, but his backup at right-back, Takehiro Tomiyasu, has had plenty of injury issues, which makes him unreliable. To make things worse, Jurrien Timber is still injured and unlikely to return this month.

A new centre-back would help Arsenal, and Bayern Munich star Matthijs de Ligt has been linked. However, Dean Jones believes there’s absolutely ‘no chance’ the £68 million () man will be on the move this month.

He told : “When you think of a partner for Saliba going forward, there is probably not many you could get that would be better than De Ligt. That is definitely an interesting one for them to target.

“But, first and foremost, Arsenal are focusing on this January window and there is no chance that they are going to be getting De Ligt right now.”

Arsenal should prioritise their attack

A new defender would certainly help Arsenal, but to really win the Premier League title this season, we think they should sign a striker this month.

The Gunners’ issue so far this term hasn’t been their defending – they have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League. Their main problem has been scoring goals.

Arteta’s men have scored the least goals among the current top five in the league table, and that’s not sustainable at all if they want to win the title this season.

As important as a new defender may prove to be, as things stand, we think Arsenal should focus on signing a goalscorer in the next four weeks.
