Nine managers linked with Newcastle job, but which one is best suited?
Rafa Benitez’s departure has sent supporters and the media into a frenzy, but it is also reportedly creating an enormous race for the vacant Newcastle United hotseat. As many as nine managers have been linked since Monday.
Here are those nine bosses, ranked over whether they would be suited for the Toon job. Whoever does replace Benitez has enormous shoes to fill, given the Spaniard’s work over the last couple of years.
9. Steve Bruce – ()
Sheffield Wednesday boss Bruce has enormous Premier League experience, but has hardly ever escaped a relegation battle in the top tier. He would be a step down, in terms of calibre and ambition.
8. David Moyes – ()
Similarly to Bruce, the former West Ham gaffer is a sign that Ashley is unwilling to show any ambition in moving the club forward. Newcastle fans will be hoping for a boss as good as Benitez, and Moyes certainly is not that.
7. Laurent Blanc – ()
Blanc has been out of work for almost three years after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2016. Yes, a good manager, but no Premier League experience and out of the loop for so long will not be worth the wages he would demand.
6. Anthony Hudson ()
Hudson has impressed as manager of New Zealand and Colorado Rapids, but the 38-year-old is yet to manage a big club. The Newcastle job may have come a few years too early for the ex-Newport County gaffer.
5. Mikel Arteta ()
Arteta has been learning from one of the best managers in football, in Pep Guardiola. However, the Spaniard has no experience of managing a club himself. That being said, he would be a solid appointment.
4. Gennaro Gattuso ()
Gattuso is an enormous name that is currently out of work after a spell in charge of AC Milan. A very average spell with the Italian giants has now seen the former midfielder looking for a new job, and though exciting, he might not be the answer.
3. Sean Dyche ()
Two years ago, Dyche would have been an excellent appointment. However, his Burnley side have stuttered of late and have shown little sign of ambition or desire to reach the next level. Dyche, though, is an excellent manager.
2. Michael Carrick ()
A boyhood fan of Newcastle United, the current Manchester United assistant would be a superb appointment. Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have shown that ex-players can make the step up, and Carrick would be loved by fans. His lack of experience, though, is worrying.
1. Jose Mourinho ()
Mourinho is obviously an enormous name in football and would eclipse the sacking of Benitez to lure the big-name gaffer to St. James’ Park. However, he would demand enormous wages, and has never managed a mid-table side.
