Nikola Vlasic performance must have Everton fans in two minds

Everton fans had double the reason to watch England take on Croatia at the weekend. Having the nation’s number one on your books no doubt gives things an extra edge. Everton fans were, as always, firmly behind Jordan Pickford.

However, Croatia also had an Everton player in their ranks. Nikola Vlasic was asked to come in and replace the injured Ivan Rakitic. Vlasic was signed by Ronald Koeman last summer after he impressed for Hajduk Split in a Europa League qualifier between the two sides.

However, Koeman was replaced initially by David Unsworth in the interim, then Sam Allardyce and now Marco Silva. The upheaval has seen the clearly talented midfielder fall down the pecking order and he was eventually loaned out to CSKA Moscow.

The 21-year-old has been in great form in Russia and has earned rave reviews. That said, some of his comments about Everton have been ill-advised. For instance,

It appears Vlasic is eyeing up a permanent exit from Everton but based in his display at Wembley the Toffees would be right to keep him in mind.

He played well in the Croatia midfield and assisted the goal for Andrej Kramaric. Croatia were winning 1-0 when he came off, the end result was a 2-1 England win.

Everton fans can, therefore, have mixed feelings about Vlasic. His actions since leaving Everton have done little to endear himself to fans. Meanwhile, his form and ability make him a player fans could be excited about.
