Nikola Katic could prove as good as a new Rangers signing with renewed confidence

Rangers got back to winning ways at the weekend. The Glasgow side defeated Livingston 3-0 away from home with a professional and clinical performance at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

It was no surprise to see that one of Rangers’ centre-backs faced the chop following the recent nightmare against Kilmarnock.

Gareth McAuley got the chop and it presented an opportunity to Nikola Katic. The Croatian joined the club for £2 million from Slaven Belupo in the summer –

He initially went straight into the first-team but soon found himself below Conor Goldson, Joe Worrall and McAuley in the pecking order.

“He’s a good player. He’s been pushing hard and working hard in training. I took him out of the firing line a while ago just to help him because he was a young kid.

“But he’s been making it very hard for me when I’ve been picking teams. So he deserves this chance and it’s a fantastic opportunity for him to come in and defend well.”

This was, in fact, his first league start since a 7-1 win against Motherwell back in November.

Steven Gerrard had to admit after the game that the player had earned his spot back in the Rangers first-team.

For the Ibrox side, it could be crucial. If Katic can continue to impress then Rangers can hopefully plug up any remaining gaps at the back and thrive going into the final stretch of the season.

The £2 million summer signing could proven even more crucial going forward from January.
