Nick Pope shares what rival players have said about St James’ Park

Nick Pope has told what plenty of opposition players have said to him about coming to St James’ Park following their 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe’s men are sixth in the Premier League table after a hard-fought win over the Toffees on Tyneside. Miguel Almiron scored the only goal with a brilliant finish during the first-half.

Pope was making his first evening appearance under the floodlights of St James’ Park as a Newcastle player. He was given little to do when it came to making saves. Everton actually only managed one shot on goal all evening – and that went off target.

But the other aspects of his performance were excellent when called upon. And following the game, Pope provided an insight into how special the occasion was in the narrow win.

“Massive. You see today and you meet people you play against and the first thing they say is what a difficult place it is to come,” .

“It’s exactly what we want it to be and more. When I signed for the football club it’s something I thought about what it would be like under the lights and first home game and it’s surpassed all my expectations for sure.”

It does appear that Newcastle are at the start of what could be a special era for the club. Obviously, much was expected when the new owners came in.

They have spent money. But they have not turned to largely washed-up superstars. Eddie Howe has been able to build a really impressive squad with a lot of potential.

And they have the means to improve further. That is quite something considering that they currently sit sixth, ahead of Liverpool right now.

That is why there is a particularly good atmosphere around St James’ Park right now. The fans finally have a team they can really get behind.

And while there is real criticism to be had of the ownership, it is exciting to see a club like Newcastle start to elevate themselves back amongst the elite.
