Report: Levy left in flux as Tottenham scrap manager plans despite rumoured £2m agreement

Tottenham Hotspur have scrapped plans to appoint Gennaro Gattuso as the club’s next manager, according to .

Daniel Levy had held talks with the Italian over succeeding Jose Mourinho after plans to hire Paulo Fonseca collapsed. But Gattuso will no longer be heading to north London, after Spurs elected to look elsewhere for the vacant position.

Tottenham have decided against hiring Gattuso after vast supporter backlash saw trend on Twitter after reports began to surface. Fans pointed to his alleged prior comments on women in football, same-sex marriage and racism.

Tottenham fired Mourinho as their manager two months ago tomorrow, but several replacements fell through. Plans for Mauricio Pochettino to return to the Premier League failed to work out with the Argentine staying at Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs also considered Antonio Conte and Hansi Flick before turning to Fonseca, who was the choice of new Managing Director Fabio Paratici. The former Juventus chief had also weighed up appointing Gattuso as Andrea Pirlo’s replacement at the Serie A side this summer.

Gattuso was a free agent after leaving Napoli at the end of last season but Juventus reappointed Massimiliano Allegri. He then joined Fiorentina, yet only lasted 22 days before swiftly entering talks to be the next Tottenham manager.

Reports by claim Gattuso was willing to accept a €2.5m (£2m) two-year contract to join Spurs. Marking a drastic saving for Levy compared to candidates like Conte, who claim wanted a £15m deal and more than £100m for transfers.
