Newcastle want to sign ‘extraordinary’ Barcelona player who could leave before the transfer window closes

Newcastle United are set for a flurry of late activity in the summer transfer window, with Eddie Howe seemingly far from done with making new signings.

Marc Guehi has been strongly linked with a move to Newcastle with the Magpies also interested in signing Trevoh Chalobah, with a central defender clearly what the Toon are looking to bring in before the market closes for another summer.

With eight days remaining before the closure of the window, time is slowly running out for Newcastle to bring in a defender or two to help improve the backline ahead of another push for European qualification having missing out narrowly last season.

And Newcastle’s interest in an FC Barcelona player could be about to intensify.

Andreas Christensen could leave Barcelona amid Newcastle interest

According to , Andreas Christensen could leave Barcelone before the window shuts next week, with Newcastle still interested in signing the Danish international as a potential option in central defence.

Lauded by Xavi Hernandez as an ‘extraordinary’ defender via , Newcastle have been linked with Christensen earlier this week, with the Magpies widening their net when it comes to their search for a new centre-back.

A former regular with Chelsea, Christensen ticks a lot of boxes for what the Magpies are looking for in a new signing, with the 28-year-old also approaching the peak of his powers after two years at Barcelona.

Yet with the Catalan giants open to selling and Christensen seemingly eager to move on, Newcastle making a swoop for the Barcelona star could be a wise move from the Toon, with the Scandinavian star a perfect addition for Howe’s defensive options.

Magpies need to really consider Christensen move in the coming days

Newcastle have clearly made signing a defender a top priority heading into the final week of the transfer window, with Christensen one of many names linked with a move to St. James’ Park.

Yet given the Dane’s experience in the Premier League and subsequent success at Barcelona, Christensen should be a defender that Newcastle are really considering, with the centre-back far from hitting his potential just yet.

Indeed, Christensen could relish with a new challenge in the Premier League as a defensive focal point for Newcastle, and a deal could be agreed upon quickly if the Toon can strike an agreement with Barcelona sooner rather than later.
