Newcastle United’s number one priority going into the summer transfer window

Newcastle United have a busy summer on the transfer front after securing Champions League football on the final day of the season.

The Magpies’ squad was stretched to the limit last time they were in the Champions League, so they’ll be eager to strengthen so they can compete on multiple fronts.

However, Newcastle will have to do so without Paul Mitchell for much of the summer, as he prepares to leave St James’ Park at the end of June.

A report has now emerged which looks at the situation behind the scenes at Newcastle, including what their number one priority is this summer.

Main Newcastle priority is to keep Alexander Isak

Newcastle’s current situation behind the scenes, along with their plans for the summer, is the subject of an in-depth article in .

The report noted how Newcastle’s PSR situation is relatively calm this summer, which means the club expects to avoid the frantic rush of last year.

In addition, the Magpies are not planning to sell any of their big players this year, and their priority is to keep hold of Alexander Isak, added the report.

“Mercifully, there is no need to sell by June 30 to satisfy PSR… so a repeat of last year’s mad dash is not envisaged,” the report read.

“Mitchell’s exit does not dilute Newcastle’s conviction that none of their big players are for sale, either. Keeping Alexander Isak is priority No 1.”

Liverpool have been with Isak in recent weeks, while Arsenal also like Isak – but with Newcastle also in the Champions League, the player’s suitors have even less of a chance now.

Who Newcastle are looking to sign this summer

Those within the Newcastle recruitment department reportedly feel they are ‘ready to move swiftly, even if a signing during the early-June window appears ambitious.’

In addition, a number of Newcastle insiders have reiterated Mitchell’s declaration that “the club is in a fantastic position to continue building” in the upcoming window.

As for targets, Newcastle have heavily discussed a number of players, with four named in the report.

The three names who don’t appear to be closing in on moves elsewhere are Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

However, Newcastle appear to have missed out on fellow target Liam Delap, who is now closing in on a move to Chelsea.
