Newcastle United to release Andy Carroll next month when short-term contract expires
According to , Newcastle United have decided to release Andy Carroll when his contract expires at the end of next month.
Steve Bruce is eager to oversee a major overhaul of the Magpies’ attacking ranks during the upcoming summer transfer window, which currently features Carroll, Callum Wilson, Dwight Gayle and Joelinton.
Newcastle are set to be without their top-scorer Wilson for the final games of the Premier League season, after the £20million () summer signing from AFC Bournemouth injured his hamstring in last Friday’s win over Leicester City ().
It remains to be seen if Carroll is afforded a send-off in front of United’s supporters with some fans at home to Sheffield United on May 19, or if Bruce will favour Dwight Gayle, who is also a free agent this summer, or Joelinton.
Reports by in March claimed Gayle had agreed to take a pay cut in order to stay on at St. James’ Park with a three-year contract, but is yet to officially put pen to paper and has only over Newcastle’s last four games.
Joelinton has enjoyed an upturn in form of late with goals against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, but has still only found the back of the net Premier League games since arriving in a £40m () transfer from TSG Hoffenheim in 2019.

It will come as no surprise to Newcastle’s supporters that their club is expected to part with Carroll at the end of the he signed last summer, as the terms of his contract are worth £75,000-per-week () which makes him one of the Toon’s top-earners.
Bruce has shown throughout the campaign that he is not overly a fan of what Carroll can offer in his system, either, with the 32-year-old starting in all competitions and making an additional 15 appearances from the bench.
Carroll has previously vented his frustration at being given such limited game time and having a feeling that he cannot change Bruce’s mind (), but has rarely done enough on the pitch to warrant reconsideration with just to St. James’ Park.
Carroll was prolific during his first spell in the North East to land a £35m () move to Liverpool, but gone are the days of that player – even if Nedum Onuoha still the misfiring weapon brings ‘a sense of chaos’ to the pitch.
