Report: Newcastle United hold talks with 34-year-old Rangers target

Newcastle United have held talks with Rangers target Martin Skrtel over the possibility of a summer move,

The 34-year-old will leave Fenerbahce after just a single season with the Turkish giants and several clubs are likely to be interested in his services.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard had made the Slovakian an offer to join the Gers,

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez will hope to strengthen his squad during the summer and defensive recruits look to be on the agenda.

The Magpies finished in 13th position last season and that represented a regression on the season previous. Benitez, should his contract get extended, will hope to add the relevant players to his squad in order to challenge towards the top half.

Benitez was the Liverpool manager when Skrtel put pen-to-paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract at Anfield as a 23-year-old back in 2008.

TBR Verdict

Skrtel is obviously a trusted defender by Rafa Benitez given the duo’s time together at Liverpool. Whether he can justify signing him as a veteran in 2019, remains to be seen, however.

Newcastle already have Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar and those two represent solid defenders with bright futures in the game.

The no-nonsense central defender would represent a solid option to add to the squad but there doesn’t seem much scope for him to play much at St James’ Park.

Rangers could be a better option in terms of him playing football. Skrtel now has the decision to make over whether to sign for his former team-mate or the man who handed him his first Premier League opportunity.
