Newcastle United considering January bid for ‘top-drawer’ Premier League player

Newcastle didn’t quite get what they wanted in the summer transfer window but could now reprise a bid to land one of their main targets from July and August.

FFP and PSR issues meant Newcastle were unable to bring as many new players in for Eddie Howe as he wanted.

It wasn’t for a want of trying, though, from the Magpies.

Over the summer they did do deals to allow for movement and before the window closed, the Mags made a huge push to try and sign Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi.

In the end, a huge bid of around £65m was rejected by the Eagles.

However, all is not lost for Newcastle and according to the Northern Echo, a January move for Guehi is now being considered.

Newcastle to consider new Marc Guehi bid

According to the report from the , Newcastle are still keeping tabs on Guehi’s situation at Palace.

Steve Parish has been unable to get Guehi to sign a new contract and with him entering the final 18 months of his deal in January, Newcastle could strike.

However, the report is caveated with the fact Newcastle will not be going close to the £65m they offered in the summer for Guehi.

Instead, it’s claimed the Mags will argue his value is now lower due to his contract length and that furthermore, his patchy form has knocked further value off him.

Guehi is believed to be open to the move but until a fee is agreed, the England defender will be staying put.

Newcastle will want a quick call on Guehi

The suggestions that Newcastle will not bid what they did in the summer makes plenty of sense.

The contract situation means Guehi could effectively leave for nothing in just a few transfer windows’ time.

For Newcastle, a new defender is very much needed and Guehi does tick a lot of boxes for them.

However, cost will be important and if Palace show no sign of budging, then you’d imagine Newcastle will move on pretty quickly.
