Newcastle transfer news: Howe tipped to sign England international in coming weeks

pundit Danny Murphy feels that Harry Maguire would be a good signing for Eddie Howe at Newcastle.

man Maguire had an outstanding World Cup for England but has been struggling for gametime at club level this season.

Newcastle have been so strong defensively this season and they have signed a central defender in each of Howe’s two transfer windows in charge.

Dan Burn came in during last season’s relegation battle but has since moved to left-back, with long term target Sven Botman arriving over the summer.

Murphy says Newcastle should try and sign Maguire

He said: “No (Maguire does not have a future at Manchester United), but he has a good future somewhere else because he’s still a great talent.

“He’s got leadership qualities, he’s learnt at United. Yes, he’s had a little bad spell but a lot of it has been good. He’s done brilliantly on the international stage at big tournaments, he’s great on set-plays, he’s a good character.

“He’s not a ‘big time Charlie’, he’s humble, he looks like a great lad, good family, good support network around him. He’s going to have many takers.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Eddie Howe went for Maguire as another choice for them. A club like Newcastle could do a lot worse than get someone like Maguire.”

From a Newcastle perspective, a potentially expensive new central defender does not look like a priority given their defensive record this season.

Would Maguire get into their team? It is hard to see why Howe would shake up his back four, although if they do qualify for Europe next term, Newcastle will need a squad.

Maguire will likely look to move somewhere he will play regularly, and it also remains to be seen what any potential transfer valuation would be.

Another point to note would be that Newcastle have largely preferred younger hungry players, although Maguire’s England teammate Kieran Trippier is an example of an experienced star doing that and making a huge difference because he is the right type of personality.
