Report: Newcastle quoted £50m for South American goal machine

Newcastle have been told they’ll need to pay in excess of £50m if they want to sign Uruguay and Benfica goal machine, Darwin Nunez, during the January transfer window.

That’s according to , who claim the Toon are keen on signing Nunez if they can. However, the striker has a £100m release-clause in his Benfica deal, and the Magpies have been told it will cost more than half that amount to get him early.

Nunez, 22, has been absolutely flying this season with Benfica. He’s in 13 goals in 13 league games so far, with 18 coming overall. claims that both Manchester City and Atletico Madrid have also been keeping tabs on the forward.

Newcastle are looking to splash the cash in January to try and save their season. Relegation is a serious threat as things stand, with Eddie Howe desperate for new players. PIF know they need to back Howe, and a whole host of players have been linked so far.

Currently, the Magpies are in serious trouble. Covid cases, plus injuries to key players like Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, are threatening to completely derail their season.

TBR’s View: Darwin Nunez Is Quality But An Expensive Risk For Newcastle

While money isn’t really an issue for Newcastle, it’s highly unlikely Nunez will fancy the Championship. So if Newcastle do sign him, they are essentially banking on him firing them to safety. If it works out, then great. But if not, they then face losing a £50m+ player just six months or so down the line.

However, these might be the risks the club needs to take in January. Newcastle need quality and they need it in quickly.

If Nunez does sign and does produce the goods, then few will argue it wasn’t money well spent come the summer.
