Report: Newcastle told to forget about signing £40m ‘machine’ in January

Newcastle United won’t be signing Lille defender, Sven Botman, during the January transfer window as the French club refuse to alter their stance on the young Dutchman.

The Magpies have been heavily linked with a move for Botman this month. At one point, it looked like he was the number one target and a deal may be done. However, any hope of said deal now looks dead in the water, according to

report that Lille have told Botman once again of their intentions to keep him. It’s suggested that even if Newcastle up their offers for Botman, that Lille will still hold firm. With that, the Magpies are to move on and will instead continue to look at Diego Carlos and Benoit Badiashile. Both have been heavily-linked, and both could cost over £35m.

Botman – once labelled a ‘machine’ by former Southampton man Jose Fonte – is now expected to stay in Lille until at least the summer. The defender is said to be keen on European football anyway, thus making Newcastle’s pursuit a tricky one in the first place.

TBR’s View: Newcastle Missing Out On Sven Botman Will Sting

While they were happy with the signing of Kieran Trippier and rightly praised, this one will hurt Newcastle a tad. They were hoping to lure Botman from a Champions League side. But it looks like they’ve now failed.

The good news is that PIF are wanting signings quickly. In the Athletic’s report, it states how Saturday’s loss to Cambridge saw the new owners reiterate their desire to get new signings done ‘imminently’.

A number of players have been linked, it’s just a case now of who they can get. Certainly, there’s enough cash to do business. It will all come down to the selling club, and of course, the money.
