Newcastle should revive last summer’s interest in Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham
Rafael Benitez and Newcastle United have lacked attacking options this season and should consider a move for Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham, who is currently out on loan with fellow Premier League side Swansea City.
The 20-year-old has had a mixed time with the Swans, with goals recently hard to come by, compared to his outstanding spell in the Championship with Bristol City last season and also having to adapt to another manager in Carlos Carvajal.
Abraham has netted five Premier League goals since his move to south Wales, making 15 league starts and another 13 substitute appearances. Despite not hitting the form of last season, he still remains one of the most talented youngsters in the league.
The Englishman scored 26 goals in 48 games on loan with Lee Johnson at Ashton Gate and started positively for Paul Clement before the former Bayern Munich assistant was sacked back in December.
Under the right manager, Abraham can thrive. With the Magpies restricted transfer budget, securing the young England under-21 striker could come as a huge coup for Benitez and his side.
Ayoze Perez and Dwight Gayle have only managed 13 goals between them and the impressive Aleksandar Mitrovic is looking to secure a move away from Tyneside, meaning another striker is needed.
It is unlikely the Chelsea loanee will stay at Swansea next season with the club looking doomed to relegation after losing their crucial match with relegation rivals Southampton.
As reported by theChronicle Live, former England forward Ian Wright revealed that he was ‘praying’ for Tammy Abraham to join Newcastle at the end of last season.
Rafa Benitez even saw the Chelsea youth prospect at an England U21’s training session at St George’s Park as the side prepared for European under-21 Championships and the Newcastle manager was in attendance to try and convince him to join the Magpies.
This could motivate Newcastle to go again for the young forward who will be likely to move out on loan again next season, with first-team chances limited at Stamford Bridge.
With Newcastle fans famous for warming to prolific goalscorers it could prove the destination for Abraham to feel at home and revitalise his Premier League career.
