Newcastle should swoop for Everton’s James McCarthy this month

Newcastle United should make a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

The Irishman is way down in the pecking order at Goodison Park at the moment following his return from a leg break suffered against West Bromwich Albion last year.

A host of clubs have been linked with a January loan move for him including West Ham United, West Brom, Aston Villa and, most recently, Celtic.

One club that should definitely be entering the race to sign him is Newcastle.

McCarthy can replace wantaway Hayden

Newcastle have a bit of a situation on their hands in that Isaac Hayden still wants to leave the club.

The midfielder handed in a transfer request last summer but saw his attempts to leave blocked by Rafa Benitez.

The Magpies should certainly consider moving for McCarthy, who needs a place to get his career going again after his injury nightmare.

Pre-injury, McCarthy was known for being tidy in possession with good defensive discipline.

He has a host of Premier League experience and could be a good acquisition to help navigate Newcastle away from the relegation zone.

Benitez would have to convince Marco Silva though, after the Portuguese said on Friday that he wanted to keep McCarthy for the rest of the season ().
