Newcastle should closely examine Brighton’s Pascal Gross this weekend with midfield overhaul expected

With their safety already confirmed, Newcastle United can rest at ease ahead of this weekend’s trip to the south coast.

In Saturday’s late kick-off, the Magpies take on Brighton and Hove Albion away from home with their opponents scrapping for safety.

Three games remain in the Premier League and just three points separate Brighton from 18th-place Cardiff City.

With only one relegation spot left, Brighton will be desperate to pick up some points against Newcastle.

But with relegation a real possibility for the Seagulls, this should be a chance for Newcastle to closely examine midfielder Pascal Gross.

If Brighton are relegated, Gross could be a good cut-price signing for Rafa Benitez’s men, who will need central midfielders this summer.

Jonjo Shelvey has been linked with West Ham (), Isaac Hayden needs to move down south for family reasons () and Mo Diame does not believe he will earn a new contract ().

This leaves Ki Sung-yeung and Sean Longstaff at Newcastle. And Benitez knows that he will need at least two new central midfielders in his squad.

At the right price, Gross could be a shrewd purchase. The German midfielder has impressed for Brighton since his switch from FC Ingolstadt in Germany.

Gross was Brighton’s standout performer last season with seven goals and eight assists in 38 Premier League matches.

This season, the 27-year-old has not quite reached the same heights, scoring two goals and providing two assists with injury holding him back a bit.

But Newcastle should still scout Gross ahead of the summer transfer window. For the right price, he would be a strong addition to their squad if Brighton go down.
