If Liverpool offload 27-year-old, Newcastle should front the queue
Newcastle United finished in 13th place in the Premier League during 2018/19 and the challenge next season will be to edge closer to the top half.
The immediate priority for the Magpies’ hierarchy is to sort of the contract situation with Rafa Benitez, who will see his contract come to an end next month.
Once the Spaniard’s terms are sorted out attention will turn towards the transfer market. Indeed, it could well be a clause in Benitez’s new contract that he is allowed to recruit the players that he wishes.

Newcastle will look to recruit a couple of stellar players to alongside some extremely talented youngsters already in place at the club.
Some news from Liverpool could alert the Magpies in the direction of a potential summer signing for Benitez to consider this summer.
Xherdan Shaqiri could depart Anfield after just one season. The Swiss attacker has failed to hold down a regular place in the team and he could be offloaded.
If that is the case and the 27-year-old is deemed surplus to requirements, Newcastle must pounce.

The Switzerland international might have struggled to get in the Liverpool team, but that doesn’t make him a bad player. Six goals and five assists came from just 15 starts.
If Newcastle can hand him the regular first-team football that he so desperately craves then his signing is a no-brainer. The £13 million man boasts superb technique, can take players on and is also capable of playing in more than one position.
Benitez will probably have other targets in mind this summer but he could do a lot worse than sign Shaqiri, who would certainly help take the Magpies to the next level.
