Newcastle round-up: Midfielder exit, Lerager bid, Villas-Boas rivalling Celtic pursuit

Newcastle United are expected to be busy on deadline day as The Toon look to make some last-minute additions in their bid to avoid a relegation scrap – and a midfielder clearly looks at the top of the agenda.

Here is a morning round-up of Newcastle’s potential business on the final day of the January window – and it includes two players that could end up on Tyneside, and one that might head down south:

Matty Longstaff to join Championship side?

Watford tried to sign Longstaff, 20, in the summer on a permanent basis when his contract situation was up in the air. Now, Watford are back in for the England youth international – but this time on a loan deal.

The Hornets want a midfielder with Nathaniel Chalobah linked with an exit. Dan Gosling is expected to sign, but Longstaff is also being eyed as he continues to struggle for game time on Tyneside –

Potential bid for Lukas Lerager

have claimed that Newcastle have made Italian side Genoa aware that they could make an offer for the Denmark international before the end of play on Monday. Lerager is a regular for Genoa.

The Serie A side’s number eight – who cost Genoa just £4.25million () in the summer of 2019 – is also a target for English Championship side Brentford and FC Copenhagen. It remains to be seen if an offer is made.

Villas-Boas to rival Newcastle?

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham has been strongly linked with a move south to Tyneside – but on their deadline-day blog (7.17am) that Marseille are also interested in the French ace.

Former Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas is keen on a midfielder after selling Morgan Sanson to Aston Villa. Celtic are expected to listen to offers for the ex-Genoa and Manchester City man.
