Newcastle reportedly want to sign a striker, that Keown compared to Shearer in 2011
Newcastle reportedly want to sign Inter Milan striker Edin Dzeko in the January transfer window. A player, that during his Manchester City days, was compared to Toon legend Alan Shearer by Martin Keown in 2011.
Dzeko, 35, only joined Inter in the summer – replacing the loss of Romelu Lukaku, with the Belgian moving back to Chelsea. He continues to prove that age is just a number, scoring 11 goals in 23 league and cup appearances.
It comes after he joined Roma in the summer of 2015, initially on loan from Manchester City. Spending six years at Roma, he scored 119 goals in 260 games for the Serie A giants – as well as laying on 55 assists.
that two-time Premier League winner is a target for Newcastle. He has a contract with Simone Inzaghi’s side until the summer of 2023 – and it is incredibly unlikely he will move to Tyneside in January.

However, the Toon’s new owners are keen and many will be excited at the prospect of Dzeko – especially given something Keown said in 2011. He likened Dzeko to Newcastle legend Shearer 10 years ago.
“He is somewhere between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alan Shearer. He is upright in his movement, like Ibrahimovic, but he is more of a goalscorer and more nimble,”
Keown on Dzeko: A good signing, but no chance do Newcastle pull it off
There are numerous reasons for this. The main one being that Newcastle currently sit in the relegation zone, while Inter are in with a shout of achieving a second successive Serie A title come May.
Secondly, Dzeko is also playing in European football. From Newcastle’s point of view, they have other areas that are much more important – such as right-back, centre midfield and centre-back. A striker is not crucial.
