Newcastle reportedly want Liverpool star that Pep Guardiola loved managing

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri this summer if a takeover goes through in the coming weeks – and Pep Guardiola is an enormous fan, after working with the Swiss ace at Bayern Munich.

Shaqiri has endured a difficult spell at Liverpool since joining the Reds in 2018 for £13m (). Despite being crucial to the iconic 4-0 comeback against Barcelona in last season’s Champions League semi-final, he has only played 10 times this term.

Indeed, a number of injuries have prevented the former Stoke City star from playing on a regular basis. Newcastle are willing to offer Shaqiri an escape route, and Shaqiri is keen on a move if a takeover goes through.

It remains to be seen how much Shaqiri will cost, but Manchester City manager Guardiola – who managed Shaqiri during his time as Bayern manager – explained just how much he liked having Shaqiri as a player, back in 2014.

“He can play in the middle or on the flanks. He’s dynamic and he knows where the goal is. He’s another important player for me,” Guardiola claimed six years ago,

TBR’s view – Shaqiri would be a stunning Newcastle signing

Yes, the last season has been a difficult one for Shaqiri. But luring him to Tyneside would hand the Toon an enormous amount of creativity, something which they currently are lacking in – even with Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron.

Not only that, but Shaqiri gives Newcastle experience, a threat from set-pieces and cover in numerous positions. He would be able to play in attacking midfield or on either flank. Shaqiri could even do a job as a box-to-box midfielder.

Just as Guardiola explains, he knows where the goal is and that is just what Newcastle need.
