Newcastle reportedly want Chelsea star, but Alan Shearer has identified one big flaw

Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso this summer with Frank Lampard’s side looking to bring in a new left-back in the coming months – but Alan Shearer has previously criticised the Spain international.

that 29-year-old Alonso is being eyed by Newcastle and that the Toon are in talks with Chelsea. A fee of £26million is said to be enough to sign Alonso, who still has three years left on his £100,000-a-week deal

Chelsea are intent on signing a new left-sided defender with Leicester Coty’s Ben Chilwell considered first choice. Chelsea also have Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico and Porto’s Alex Telles on their shortlist, but Chilwell is first choice.

That has seen Alonso and Emerson Palmeri’s future fall into doubt, and Newcastle are looking to take advantage. Toon icon Shearer in 2018 that Alonso leaves too much space in behind, as he looks to get forward.

“Liverpool’s front three can take full advantage of the space Marcos Alonso leaves behind him if he bombs as far forward as he likes to,” , ahead of September 2018’s 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Liverpool.

TBR’s view – Should Newcastle sign Alonso?

At £26million, Alonso is enormously expensive given he turns 30 in December. But Newcastle do need to sign a left-back this summer, and may even have to complete deals for two left-sided defender.

Danny Rose and Jetro Willems remain on loan, while Paul Dummett has struggled with injury and has fallen out of favour. Is Alonso the right signing? Yes, he is expensive and yes, Shearer is right in stating that he leaves gaps.

But a set-piece specialist that has had a hand in 39 goals during 140 Chelsea appearances would add to Newcastle easily. It must also be stated that Newcastle play with a five-man defence, so he would have cover as a left-back.
