Newcastle reportedly want 24-year-old PL player Shearer labelled ‘best player on the park’ after 2021 display

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Nat Phillips from Liverpool as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his defensive options in the January transfer window.

, the 24-year-old is a target for the Magpies. It comes with the centre-back yet to feature in the Premier League this season.

It always seemed unlikely that Phillips would feature too much for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Virgil van Dijk is now back from injury. And Ibrahima Konaté joined the club in the summer.

But he may have anticipated playing a little more than he has. He signed a new contract in August.

And he also ended last season in really impressive form, with the highlight coming when Liverpool beat Burnley 3-0 in the penultimate game of the campaign.

Phillips scored in the win. And he produced a colossal display at the back. In fact, he won nine aerial duels – more than double what any Burnley player managed ().

And following the game, Alan Shearer that the defender was the star of the show in the emphatic win.

“It was a bit of a tricky start for Nat Phillips, but after that, once he settled down, he was the best player on the park.  He was commanding, did everything he had to do very well,” the Newcastle legend said.

Phillips does have his limitations. Liverpool fans would probably welcome the chance to receive a decent fee for the former Bolton man.

But there is no reason why he could not prove to be an outstanding signing for the Magpies.

He is the kind of defender who shows the bravery on the pitch to inspire those around him. It seemed like he was never going to lose a header that went anywhere near him last season.

And he was never afraid to get stuck in.

Newcastle definitely need more quality in their ranks. But they would also not say no to adding players with more fight.

Phillips has that in abundance.
