Newcastle United have been linked with a plethora of managers over the past few weeks.
Now it looks as though there’s a frontrunner for the job, according to various media reports.
And with the St James’ Park hotseat now vacant, there will be a new appointment for sure.
On Wednesday, the claimed that Paulo Fonseca was a “serious contender” for the Newcastle job.
The 48-year-old held a Zoom call with members of the club’s new-look hierarchy and talks were positive, added the report.
has deemed Fonseca one of the front-runners for the role and is thought to have support from Amanda Staveley.
And has also reported on Newcastle’s apparent interest in Fonseca, claiming he’s the front-runner for the job.
Magpies fans should be delighted with these developments, as the Portuguese is an impressive coach who’d be great for the club.
Newcastle target Fonseca – the story so far
Fonseca spent his entire playing career in Portuguese football, turning out for the likes of Barreirense, Leca, Belenenses, Maritimo, Vitoria Guimaraes and Estrela Amadora.
He retired in June 2005 at the age of 32 and started coaching immediately after retiring, remaining two years at the helm of Estrela’s youths.
From 2007 to 2011, Fonseca was in charge of several modest teams in Portugal, before taking the reins at second-division Aves.
Between 2012 and 2015, he had two spells at Pacos de Ferreira either side of a stint at Porto, where he won the Portuguese Super Cup.
In 2016, Fonseca took his first job outside Portugal, joining Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.
It was here that Fonseca made a real name for himself, winning the in his three seasons, plus a Ukrainian Super Cup.
After his stint at Shakhtar, Fonseca managed Serie A outfit Roma, leaving at the end of last season – he is now a free agent.
“An extraordinary performance”
In December 2017, Shakhtar 2-1 in the Champions League, handing Pep Guardiola’s side their first defeat in 227 days.
The City boss had praised Fonseca’s team three months earlier in the reverse fixture at the Etihad, despite beating them 2-0.
“Tonight, we beat an amazing team,” he told the City . “It was an extraordinary performance.
“We could not allow them to dictate because Fred and Stepanenko were amazing.
“They have fantastic players, are well organised and defended really well.
“A lot of credit to my players because we had to work hard to beat them. It was big result for us and they deserved our respect.”
“Deserve compliments”
In 2019, Antonio Conte turned down the Roma job, which allowed Fonseca to get his big break in a major European league.
The Italian praised Fonseca at the time, quoting him as saying: “He is demonstrating his qualities after his time in Ukraine.
“Here, you have to settle in. Your opponents study you and prepare very well to stop you. He brought an idea and also used it in Serie A.
“Roma deserves compliments. They have a competitive squad made up of experienced players and very good talent.”
Premier League dream
Back in October 2017, when Fonseca’s Shakhtar were shining in the Champions League, the manager – then linked with Everton – gave an interview to .
“All coaches want to go to England and I am one,” said Fonseca.
“I have this dream and I believe this can happen. I believe a lot this can happen. If it’s soon or not, I have this dream.
“I have a big, big passion about the game and the atmosphere in England is amazing. I hope one day to live it. It’s the biggest league in the world.”
Fonseca’s coaching philosophy
When Roma appointed Fonseca in 2019, they featuring a number of quotes about his style of play and inspirations.
“My coaching philosophy? Well, I have very clear ideas – ideas I think you can see in my teams,” he said.
“That involves having the ball, taking the initiative and being an offensive team.
“These are the aspects that define my game and my aim in matches.”
