Newcastle may regret not selling Lascelles to West Ham

Newcastle United turned down a bid from West Ham for Jamaal Lascelles during the summer, according to . The fee reported was £20 million rising to £25 million.

At the time, it seemed a ludicrous suggestion that the Magpies should sell their captain. Lascelles had a great season in the Premier League and was unfortunate to miss out on the England World Cup squad.

However, transfer valuations can fluctuate in football and the start of the season from Newcastle has seen Lascelles’ decrease significantly.

He was developing a reputation as one of the best young English defenders, but he has been overtaken by several over the opening months of the season. Lewis Dunk was given an international call-up ahead of him earlier this month.

There is time for Lascelles to return to his best form, but it may come too late for Newcastle to earn a big fee for him. Interested teams will be able to pick him up for a cheaper fee if the Magpies are relegated. Mike Ashley will be very aware of that.

It was a huge statement from the club to turn down the offer from West Ham, but in hindsight, it may be something they regret.
