Newcastle ready to pounce and sign £29m winger if transfer meeting goes wrong

Newcastle United have bided their time so far this summer transfer window but with the new Premier League season fast-approaching, arrivals are expected imminently.

Newcastle are close to signing Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi who is coming off the back of a sensational Euro 2024 campaign with England.

The 24-year-old was drafted in to replace the injured Harry Maguire and was arguably one of the best defenders in the competition.

As such, Newcastle are trying to pinch him from Palace and they’re also ready to pounce on a winger who Juventus want to sign.

Newcastle ready to pounce on Fiorentina winger Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle have been linked to Fiorentina’s Nicolas Gonzalez this summer after his prolific season in Serie A.

Gonzalez netted 16 times whilst laying on five assists last term and played a key role in Argentina’s Copa America triumph.

The Magpies have already sounded out the 26-year-old but face stiff competition from Juventus, who are due to have a meeting with Fiorentina on Thursday, according to .

The two clubs are expected to discuss a fee but if Juve fail to accept Fiorentina’s demands, a deal could collapse.

That’ll then leave the door open for Newcastle, who are ready to pounce on the £29m-rated wide player.

Nico Gonzalez profile

Gonzalez is a left-footed right winger by trade but he can also operate as a number 10 and striker – evincing his terrific versatility.

The Argentina international excels in the air, ranking in the top one per cent for aerial duels won per 90 compared to his positional peers across Europe, as per .

So, evidently, he’s well-equipped to play the number nine role when Alexander Isak needs rest or if Callum Wilson is sidelined.
