Newcastle player wants £3m payout if he’s to leave St James’ Park this summer

Newcastle United are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

The Magpies‘ squad was pushed to its very limit last season, which impacted on their Premier League position.

Newcastle will now look to bolster their ranks, although they must do so while working within strict profit and sustainability parameters.

The Magpies will also be eager to move on players who are surplus to requirements, such as Ryan Fraser.

The 30-year-old winger spent most of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Southampton, who earned promotion to the Premier League a few weeks ago.

Now TBR Football understands that Southampton and Fraser have agreed terms on him to move to St Mary’s on a permanent deal – however, they both want it to be a free transfer.

Fraser has a year left on his current deal at Newcastle – who are willing to let him leave for nothing.

However, sources have confirmed to TBR that Fraser wants his final year paid by Newcastle in order to leave – which we understand would be around £3million.

As it stands, Newcastle are not looking to pay him off in full – but Southampton don’t want to pay a fee either.

If no agreement is reached, Fraser is willing to return to Newcastle – where he has previously been forced to train with the club’s Under 23s.

Newcastle in limbo over Ryan Fraser future

Fraser moving away from Newcastle this summer would be the best thing for all parties involved.

The player gets the chance to cut his ties with the Magpies and go on the books at a Premier League club where he’s likely to play regularly.

Meanwhile, Southampton get a player with proven Premier League experience, and Newcastle get a £63,000-a-week off their wage bill.

However, with Fraser seemingly wanting his final year paid off, this leaves Newcastle in a sort of limbo with regards to the player’s future.

Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks. We’re likely to see negotiations between the various parties. There’s still plenty of time for an agreement to be reached.
