Newcastle open talks to sign Nicolas Gonzalez

A story from in Italy now states that Newcastle have opened contact with Fiorentina to discuss a deal for Nicolas Gonzalez.

The Argentina international is expected to leave Florence this summer after a breakdown in his relationship with the Serie A side, who are looking to receive at least €30m (£25m) from his sale.

Quotidiano Sportivo add that Juventus and Atalanta are also keen to sign Gonzalez.

Fiorentina find themselves in a strong negotiating position despite the Argentine’s desire to leave this summer, as he is contracted to the Italian outfit until July 2028.

Quotidiano Sportivo also mention that Fiorentina will be happy to keep Gonzalez, who has been compared to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, if nobody meets his asking price.

The man from Belen de Escobar shone throughout the 2023/24 campaign, scoring 16 goals while also providing five assists in 44 appearances as Fiorentina reached the UEFA Conference League final.

Argentine expected to replace Miguel Almiron

If Newcastle are successful in talks to sign Gonzalez, we expect the 26-year-old to replace Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle are keen to sell Almiron before the 2024/25 campaign officially begins, with clubs in Saudi Arabia looking to sign the Paraguay international this summer.

The Newcastle No.24 typically plays on the right flank, which is where Gonzalez made 35 appearances last season, so it could be assumed that Howe will replace the Paraguayan with the Argentine.

Interestingly, the Fiorentina No.10 also made eight appearances on the left and one as a central striker, so he is a versatile attacker.
