Report: Newcastle made offer for ‘fantastic’ int’l forward as well as Isak, would have taken £7.6m-a-year contract
Newcastle United have signed Alexander Isak today but they also put an offer on the table to Netherlands forward, Memphis Depay.
That’s according to reports in Italy anyway. name checks both Newcastle and Manchester United as having put concrete interest on the table for Depay while he was trying to sign for Juventus. It’s claimed that the interest from the Toon and United triggered Depay to ask the Turin club for around £7.6m-a-year in wages.
Of course, Newcastle will probably walk away from any deal for Depay right now after signing Isak. The Swedish striker has arrived for a club record fee, with the club shocking fans and pundits alike by going out and splashing out.

Many had expected Newcastle to keep things reined in a bit this summer after their modest business so far. But Howe has obviously had things bubbling in the background, with Isak the marquee signing many of the Toon Army were hoping for when PIF took over.
For Memphis Depay, meanwhile, it looks like being a long road to find that way out of Barcelona. He appears to have priced himself out of Juventus, while Newcastle and Manchester United are looking increasingly unlikely.
TBR’s View: Isak Better For Newcastle Than Depay
There’s something about Memphis Depay not getting his move just yet that makes you question if there is something underlying preventing teams from taking him. Indeed, those £7m+ wage requests won’t do him any favours.
For Newcastle, they might have splashed out on Isak here but the reality is he will turn out to be a better signing than splashing huge wages on Depay.
Isak is the sort of signing who’ll be desperate to do well in the Northeast and crucially, he has a resale value if he does exceed expectations.
