Newcastle have to avoid Everton’s spending mistakes.

Newcastle’s Saudi takeover leaves them in a wonderful position to grow as a club.

Amanda Staveley has the chance to invest in the training ground, the stadium and most importantly, the squad.

However, they’re not the first club in the Premier League to commit to player spending.

Over the best part of the last decade, Everton have been pumping money into their squad under Farhad Moshiri.

It hasn’t gone to plan, though, for the Toffees.

Everton have made some crucial mistakes in recruitment and must serve as a warning to the now loaded Magpies.

The last seven years have been telling for the Merseyside club.

Everton have spent £608.3m on player transfers since summer 2014.

In that time they’ve only managed to recoup £303.3m

That leaves the Toffees with a net spend of over £300m in seven years () with a record high finish of 7th in that time.

Financial Fairplay will no doubt intervene to prevent Newcastle from going nuclear with their spending immediately.

However, over the course of the next decade they’ll be desperate to climb up the table.

The likes of Everton, Leicester and Tottenham will be the first clubs in the Magpies’ sights.

To do that, they’ll need to buy smart and not just buy big.

Following in Everton’s footsteps would see this Newcastle rebuild take much longer than needed.

However, there are enough good models to follow in English football.

Tottenham, Leicester and Manchester City’s spending plans are all suitable models to follow.

It all depends on who gets brought in to oversee the project though.

A project manager and a sensible director of football will make all of the difference.

At least, though, the new ownership have a perfect idea of what not to do when it comes to Premier League investment.
