Newcastle must cling to Longstaff at all costs, despite reported Manchester United interest

According to the , Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is amongst Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer targets for this summer. The Red Devils are reportedly preparing to make a formal offer for the 21-year-old once they have secured the services of a new right-back and centre-back.

Longstaff burst onto the scene last season at St James’ Park. Given his impressive performances, it is easy to see why the Magpies’ academy product has caught the eye of the Old Trafford decision-makers. The Newcastle man would add energy and discipline to Solskjaer’s midfield. He also represents an affordable target.

However, Rafa Benitez must do everything he can to ensure that Newcastle hang on to Longstaff at all costs. The youngster is one of the most exciting prospects to have emerged at St James’ Park in years. He already plays a vital role for the team. His potential makes him a very valuable asset, and one which would be tough to replace.

On top of that, losing local lad Longstaff to Manchester United would be very tough for Newcastle fans to take. It would also demonstrate a worrying lack of ambition within the Newcastle hierarchy if they were willing to let one of their most promising players leave this summer.

With all that in mind, the Magpies must reject any offers for Longstaff this summer.
