Newcastle make contact to sign £21m defender after £60m Marc Guehi bid rejected

Newcastle have spent weeks trying to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace – although Eddie Howe now appears to have moved on.

As things stand, the Magpies have seen four bids rejected for Guehi by the Eagles – who want a guaranteed £65m for the England international – with the claiming that Newcastle’s most recent offer was worth £60m.

Now – according to reports in Turkey – Newcastle have made contact to sign an alternative…

Newcastle make Jayden Oosterwolde approach

A story from in Turkey now states that Newcastle have made an enquiry to sign Jayden Oosterwolde from Fenerbahce.

The Turkish news outlet believe Newcastle have asked Fenerbahce if they can open talks over a deal for the Dutchman, who has played 90 minutes under Jose Mourinho in both Super Lig games so far this season.

Aslinda believe Fenerbahce have put a €25m (£21.3m) price tag on Oosterwolde – who has a contract with the Turkish giants until July 2027 – and ideally want to keep the man from Zwolle, who can play on the left or in the centre of defence.

Crucially, Fenerbahce are close to selling Ferdi Kadioglu to Brighton, so Mourinho’s side may not agree to sell Oosterwolde as well, if that move is finalised before Newcastle can reach an advanced stage in talks to sign the 23-year-old.

Marc Guehi saga may not be over

Interestingly, Aslinda add that Crystal Palace have also been in touch with Fenerbahce to ask about Oosterwolde.

Oliver Glasner already has Guehi, Joachim Andersen, Chris Richards, Chadi Riad and Rob Holding to play in central defence, so it feels unlikely that the Eagles would move to sign another defender unless one of their existing options was about to leave.

That could suggest someone is now close to signing Guehi, whether it be Newcastle or another club – Liverpool were said to be interested in the Crystal Palace No.6 this summer.

Furthermore, the Reds look set to lose Joe Gomez after he asked to leave, so they could move for the Crystal Palace star as a replacement, in our view at least.

The aforementioned Andersen has also been the subject of bids from Fulham, so Oosterwolde could end up replacing the Denmark international if Crystal Palace win the race for his signature.

Intriguingly, Newcastle have also been linked with Andersen – so perhaps the Magpies are now targeting a different Crystal Palace defender.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Newcastle and Crystal Palace attempt to sign Oosterwolde.
