Newcastle join race to sign defender who left Nottingham Forest in 2023 with Liverpool also keen

Newcastle are still eager to sign a new centre-back for Eddie Howe.

During the summer transfer window, Newcastle made several bids to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, although a deal failed to materialise after the south Londoners held firm.

Paul Mitchell – Director of Football at St James’ Park – then failed to land an alternative to the England international, meaning the Magpies are still in need of a new central defender.

This inability to strengthen a weak point in the squad has seen Newcastle experience a mixed start to the 2024/25 campaign, winning three, drawing three and losing three from nine Premier League outings so far.

There is still a chance of Newcastle signing Marc Guehi in 2025 – as he is yet to sign a new contract with Crystal Palace – although TBR Football understand Mitchell has now joined the race to sign a different defender.

Newcastle shortlist Loic Bade

Sources now inform TBR Football that Newcastle have joined the hunt to sign Loic Bade from Sevilla.

A right-sided central defender remains a priority for the Magpies after failing to sign Guehi, and while Newcastle still admire the Crystal Palace star, Mitchell has been tasked with finding alternative options, rather than put all of his eggs into one basket.

As such, TBR Football understand Bade has been shortlisted by Newcastle, after the Frenchman impressed for France at the Olympic Games – winning silver – while also enjoying a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign with Sevilla.

It is believed that Liverpool, Aston Villa and Bayern Munich are also interested in the Sevilla No.22 – who left Nottingham Forest back in January 2023 after a loan from Rennes was abruptly terminated.

TBR Football are aware that Sevilla would be open to selling Bade – who admitted Tottenham wanted him – in the January transfer window, for a sum considerably less than his current €60m (£50.1m) release clause.

Newcastle do still need to be wary of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) – but it is understood a deal for Bade could be financed by selling Kieran Tripper and Miguel Almiron, who are both eager to leave Tyneside in 2025.

Paul Mitchell could sign a new Raphael Varane for Eddie Howe

Bade was unable to make much of an impression in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest – as he failed to be given a single minute of football before departing in January 2023.

Therefore, Newcastle fans may not know much about the 24-year-old, so a comparison to a more popular player would help.

Interestingly, Bade has been likened to Raphael Varane by Italian news outlet Calciomercato, who was one of the best defenders of his generation, winning the World Cup, four UEFA Champions League titles and many other pieces of silverware.

Hopefully, Newcastle can finally sign a new central defender in 2025 – as Howe desperately needs a new addition to his backline.
