Report: Newcastle now in talks for three players from the same club including £43m Chris Wood partner

Newcastle United have held tentative talks with Benfica over the signings of three of the Portuguese club’s star players this month, according to a report from last night.

The Magpies’ search for new faces is becoming increasingly desperate. Eddie Howe wants new faces through the door before the end of January and is hoping PIF find the funds and tactics to get deals over the line. A number of potential deals are stalling, including one for Sevilla defender, Diego Carlos.

However, claims that Newcastle have potential plans in place to bring in three from Benfica. It’s believed Darwin Nunez is the main man on that list. The £43m-rated forward – who has a £100m release-clause – is one of the hottest strikers in Europe. The other two names mentioned are midfielder Soualiho Meite and defender, Lucas Verissimo.

Newcastle have managed to sign just Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier this month. Both should be worthwhile signings but the Magpies are struggling to get bigger deals over the line.

Any move for the Benfica trio here is likely to depend on other outcomes before the end of January. Nunez will be of particular interest to Newcastle fans, thanks to his goals record. The South American has goals in 25 in all comps this season already.

TBR’s View: Nunez And Benfica Teammates A Good Option For Newcastle

There’ll be few complaints from Newcastle fans if they do land Darwin Nunez. And if they bring two of his highly-rated teammates along with him, then that’s just an added bonus.

Nunez has been exceptional in the last 12 months. His goals would be a huge boost for this struggling Newcastle side and alongside Chris Wood, he’s likely to do well.

Meite and Verissimo are more unknown quantities. However, if landing the pair convinces Benfica to do business over Nunez, then it could be worthwhile.
