Newcastle genuinely thought they’d sign £42m player this month

After months of speculation, Kalvin Phillips has finally got his move away from Manchester City.

The England midfielder has joined West Ham United on loan, but, for most of this month, it’s looked as though Newcastle United were the frontrunners for his signature.

Speaking on the , Dean Jones has been discussing Newcastle’s stance in regards to Phillips, and he says that the Magpies genuinely did think for a long time that they would sign Phillips.

Now, Newcastle are having to look for alternative options after Phillips was taken off the market.

Newcastle were convinced they’d get Phillips

Jones shared what he knows about Newcastle and the man.

“Newcastle are on the lookout for a new midfielder. Kalvin Phillips will be joining West Ham and as a result of that Newcastle want to find a solution of their own because they were pretty convinced they would be getting Kalvin Phillips in this window, even if it was right at the end, they were fine with that to be honest. Now that’s not happening they’re looking for new solutions,” Jones said.

Difficult

Newcastle seemingly put a fair few of their eggs in the Phillips basket this month, and now that this deal is off the table, they may find it difficult to get anyone else.

FFP concerns aside, there’s less than week to go in the January transfer window, so if Newcastle are to go and find another midfielder they’re going to have to get a serious move on.

In the final week of the January window, clubs are rarely keen to let any of their star players go, and Newcastle may find it difficult to get an adequate midfield signing through the door in the coming days.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
