Newcastle fans react as club reportedly table £160k-a-week offer to sign midfielder

Newcastle United have reportedly tabled an ‘indispensable’ offer of £160,000 a week to sign Axel Witsel – and Toon fans have responded.

Joining Dortmund in the summer of 2018, 32-year-old Witsel is out of contract at the end of the season. But a January move is possible.

Indeed, that there are ‘several’ clubs after the 120-time Belgium international this summer. Juventus are certainly one of those.

However, Newcastle have looked to steal a march on their rivals by handing Witsel an enormous contract. He currently earns £130,000 at Dortmund.

Newcastle are willing to hand Witsel a gigantic £160,000 every week. It is claimed Juventus would be unwilling to match Newcastle.

Back in the summer, that Dortmund would be willing to cash in on Witsel for a bargain £4.25million – so not to lose him on a free.

What are Newcastle fans saying about a January move for Witsel?

Firstly, Newcastle need a holding midfielder. Of the players they currently have, Isaac Hayden is more box-to-box while Sean Longstaff is a playmaker.

Jonjo Shelvey’s passing range is as good as Witsel’s, but the Belgian offers more experience, aerial ability, and work rate as a defensive shield.

Jeff Hendrick is some way down the pecking order, while £25million summer signing Joe Willock is a no.10. Witsel is needed on Tyneside.

Would Witsel swap Champions League side Dortmund, for a relegation battle in the Premier League? For money, he might.

Indeed, Witsel has moved to the Chinese Super League in his career. Newcastle fans have discussed reports of an offer made for Witsel.
