Newcastle fans react as Chris Waddle defends Mike Ashley’s tenure
as defending current Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and claiming that he has run the club well during his 13-year tenure – and Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter.
Ashley has accepted a £300million takeover bid from Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners, who have been financially backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. The latter will control 80%.
Staveley’s group and Reuben Brothers will each own 10%, with a deposit now paid and the takeover awaiting Premier League approval. A number of obstacles have been thrown in the way of a deal being completed.
Newcastle icon Waddle spoke about Ashley’s imminently ending tenure – with an announcement reportedly a possibility this week. He said Ashley has run the club well and even described Newcastle’s facilities as wonderful.

“It’s going to have to be the right deal that suits Mike Ashley,” Waddle said. “You can’t blame him, he’s run this club very well. All right, he hasn’t spent fortunes and that’s why they’re a mid-table team.
“People think Newcastle should be up there because of the massive support they’ve got, the stadium is fantastic and the training ground is wonderful. Whoever does buy the club, and that’s a big if, then there’ll be no debt.”

Newcastle supporters were shocked by Waddle’s comments though, with the Toon’s training facilities renowned for being dilapidated and far below the Premier League standard – thanks to Ashley’s lack of investment.
Many criticised Waddle, claiming he does not know enough about the Toon to comment.
