Newcastle fans react as Andy Carroll volunteers to play centre-back

Newcastle fans have been reacting to comments from Steve Bruce that Andy Carroll has volunteered to play at centre-half against Brighton.

The Magpies are contending with an injury crisis at the moment, with Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune all sidelined for Monday’s contest.

Fortunately for Newcastle relegation is not a threat, meaning Bruce can shoehorn someone in and not have too many worries.

Despite having nothing to play for, he’ll still undoubtedly want maximum points from the game.

Speaking to the press, he revealed that burly striker Carroll has actually volunteered to play at the back.

He said (): “He’s OK, he could play. Andy reminded me that he has played centre-half before!

“It was a long, long time ago, I think he started as a left-back.
