Newcastle fans discuss appointing Nuno Espirito Santo after Tottenham exit

For the first time in the last few weeks, the managerial merry-go-round is not focusing on Newcastle United. Tottenham have decided to offload Nuno Espirito Santo, after a 3-0 loss to Manchester United. But where could the Portuguese boss end up next? Newcastle fans have had their say.

It was a match made in hell. Tottenham fans had previously become disillusioned at Jose Mourinho’s tactics – which prompted his axe upon the return of fans. But after failing to get five or six other managers, Spurs settled for Nuno – basically a younger version of Mourinho.

Indeed, Nuno was on the substitutes bench of the Porto side that Mourinho guided to Champions League glory in 2004. Incredibly similar, it was always going to be inevitable that Tottenham fans grew tired of his pragmatic style. Not one shot on target against Manchester United was the final straw.

Nuno was sacked on Monday. Antonio Conte appears to be the front runner to replace him, despite the ex-Inter and Chelsea gaffer being linked with Manchester United. But where does that leave Nuno – a man that sparkled as Wolves gaffer, and simply took the wrong job in Tottenham?

Nuno future: Could Newcastle tempt boss, after Tottenham exit?

Well, Newcastle fans have had their say. The Toon remain without a manager of their own, having offloaded Steve Bruce a few weeks after the new owners took control. But as things stand, the new owners have only made one appointment – and that is to the Under-23 manager’s office.

Elliott Dickman has come in from Sunderland to take over from Steve Harper, who was looking after the second string on an interim basis. The Toon’s chiefs need to appoint a director football and a manager as soon as possible. That is, after Graeme Jones oversaw defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

Newcastle need a manager and it appears that Paulo Fonseca and Lucien Favre are favourites. But the availability of Nuno might have just made things interesting. After all, Nuno has starred in the Premier League with Wolves. He did still win five of his 10 league games as Spurs gaffer.

Could Newcastle really go for Nuno?

Why not? He is better qualified than Favre and Fonseca for the job. He understands the Premier League, and the importance for an English club to be in the top tier – having gained promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. His pragmatic style is what Newcastle need.

Whereas it was all-out defence from Steve Bruce, Nuno would incorporate an attacking, counter-style that takes advantage of Newcastle’s pace. The likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron would all benefit with Nuno in the hotseat.

You would have to say, as well, that Nuno would surely jump at the chance to manage Newcastle following his Spurs exit. Taking to Twitter upon the news that Tottenham had ousted Nuno, many Newcastle fans think Nuno would be a top appointment for the Tyneside club.
