Newcastle fans discuss a potential move to sign Lille’s £40m-rated defender Botman

Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Lille defender Sven Botman ahead of the January window, with Eddie Howe giving his approval regarding a move – and Toon fans have responded on Twitter.

Botman, 21, has established himself as one of the best central defenders in European football. Bought by Lille from Ajax in 2020, he played a sensational role in Lille pipping PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

Newcastle need a centre-back. Steve Bruce wanted one last summer, but did not get his wish. Now, Howe is likely to want additions at the back and the new owners will surely give him money to spend.

Steve Nickson has identified Lille defender Botman as an option accordingly to – as Newcastle look to take advantage of the French outfit’s struggling finances. They are desperate to keep the Netherlands man.

But if an offer of £40million is received, then Lille will be open to his sale. Howe is said to have approved a potential move for Botman, ahead of the January transfer window.

Newcastle eye Botman: What do Toon fans think of Dutch defender?

Newcastle desperately need centre-backs. With Howe playing three at the back, he needs options. Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles will be part of his side going forward – but Ciaran Clark must not.

The Ireland international was signed as a Championship player and Newcastle’s lack of investment means he has not been replaced. Not only that, but the Toon need more depth and better quality.

Botman, at £40million, would be a brilliant signing for Newcastle. He is young, and presents a bargain even if he only stays on Tyneside for the next few years. He could be the difference. Newcastle fans had their say.
