Newcastle United are considering a move for Arsenal ace Ainsley Maitland Niles, who is currently on loan at AS Roma.

That’s according to CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs, who revealed the news in an interview with earlier this week.

Maitland-Niles, branded as  by Peter Crouch, was once one of the most talented players in Arsenal’s academy. He was viewed by many as the future of the Gunners, but things just haven’t worked out for him.

The 24-year-old barely played in the first half of the season. As a result, he was allowed to leave the club on loan in January and he joined Jose Mourinho’s Roma. Things, sadly, haven’t been great there either.

Newcastle consider move for Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles

A lot is expected of Newcastle United in the upcoming summer transfer window. They now have the money to make statement signings, but whether the biggest players in the world are prepared to join them is a different story.

Eddie Howe may have to turn to a few talented players who aren’t quite the big names in world football. Maitland-Niles could be one of them and Jacobs has revealed that they’re considering a move now.

He said about the versatile Englishman: “Maitland-Niles is surplus to requirements at Arsenal. Roma don’t want to make the loan permanent so he will be looking for a new club this summer.

“There is one year left on his deal, and Arsenal will want to sell him to make space in their squad. Newcastle are considering a move.”

So versatile

Maitland-Niles’ time as an Arsenal player since the start of last season hasn’t been great, while his loan spell under Mourinho at Roma has been a disappointing one as well so far.

However, he’s still a quality player and one of the reasons why he’d be incredibly valuable for a manager is his versatility.

Maitland-Niles can play on both wings, in either full-back position and also in central midfield. There aren’t many players in world football who can play in five different positions, but he can, and that’s why he’s one many clubs should look at this summer.

Newcastle are right to consider the 24-year-old. He would be a quality addition and the fact that he’s surplus to requirement at Arsenal means he could be available for a bargain fee before the start of next season.
