Newcastle could still make a shock signing this summer

Less than two weeks before the new Premier League season begins, Newcastle United finally seem to be stepping up their efforts to welcome new signings.

June ended in a less than ideal fire-sale at St James’ Park with both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh leaving Eddie Howe’s side.

A tough week or so for Newcastle fans to stomach, especially given they paid an eyebrow-raising fee for Odysseas Vlachodimos in order to conclude their business in time for the PSR deadline.

That being said, with the swift arrival of Paul Mitchell soon after, many of the club’s supporters imagined that there would be a strong reaction in the weeks to follow.

But more than a month later, Newcastle are yet to add further signings to their squad, failing to add to Lloyd Kelly’s welcome arrival.

Of course, 21-year-old William Osula will now be joining the club from Sheffield United, a player who Newcastle’s scouting team must expect a lot more from in the future.

But with money to spend, Newcastle could still be set for a surprise move in addition.

Newcastle in surprise talks to sign unnamed centre-back alongside Marc Guehi

According to , Newcastle are not just targeting Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw as they look to add a new centre-back.

Newcastle have opened negotiations for Guehi recently, who enjoyed excellent performances with England at the Euros.

Fortunately for Mitchell and Newcastle, TBR Football recently shared that Liverpool have pulled out of the race for Guehi.

Although, according to the report mentioned, it appears as if Howe’s side aren’t putting all of their eggs in one basket.

It’s claimed that alongside talks for Guehi, Newcastle are also in contact to sign another centre-back and negotiations could be running parallel with the pursuit of the Englishman.

The report says not to rule out a ‘surprise target emerging’ indicating that there’s a third centre-back under consideration.

It’s set to be a definitive few weeks for Newcastle who are determined to keep hold of Anthony Gordon and strengthen their squad.

Although, Newcastle do have a Gordon backup plan should a move to Liverpool gather pace before the month ends.
